Witchy Recipe: Altar Cleansing Spray

Last summer I decided it was time to make my own cleansing spray, particularly for my altar spaces and to prepare my table for a tarot reading. (Confession: I was tired of using the vinegar cleaning spray my husband uses all over our house and wanted something that smells better!) ✨🧼🧹 That means it is especially witchy and includes things like herbs, essential oils, and crystals specifically selected for a cleansing intention.

  • 🌕 Moon water for extra magick + Selene’s protection

  • 🌿 Juniper branches for cleansing & protection

  • 🍃 Sage leaves for cleansing

  • 🌼 Calendula petals for refreshing the energy

  • 💎 Amethyst for clearing negative energy

  • 💧 Peppermint essential oil for refreshment

  • 💧 Lavender essential oil for a soothing scent

I also opted to use castile soap as the base for this mixture instead of my typical vinegar spray, because it’s unscented while still providing simple cleaning properties I trust. I’ve been using this spray all over my house for 7 months now (and have gotten my husband using it in place of his vinegar spray) and I love it! I thought I’d share the full recipe for you here, and to be frank, I definitely adapted this from a recipe I found in an online search so it’s a common blend + magick.

Recipe for Altar Cleansing Spray

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups of moon water

  • 2 tbsp castile soap

  • 15 drops essential oils (I use peppermint and lavender as mentioned above)

  • OPTIONAL: cleansing+refreshing herbs (see above)

  • OPTIONAL: water-safe crystals (I used amethyst)

PROCESS

  1. OPTIONAL: Infuse the moon water with the herbs for ~30 minutes, then strain out the solid matter.

  2. Mix the moon water, castile soap, and essential oils together.

  3. Pour into your spray bottle and add the crystal if you wish.

  4. Spray onto your altar or other surface, then wipe clean with a soft cloth or towel.
